Remember those Penthouse nudie pictures that temporarily robbed Vanessa Williams of her 1984 Miss America crown? Even as her star was rising in the early '90s, they came back to haunt her when Disney decided she wasn't fit to take part in a family-friendly project.
"I was supposed to do one of the voices in 'The Lion King,' " Williams, 45, recalls outside her trailer at the Santa Monica Airport after rehearsing her hosting duties for the TV Land Awards (Sunday at 9 p.m.)
"I had met with the directors, saw the (story) boards and everything, and then was told through my agent that I would never be Disney material. That was 16, 17 years ago, so it's interesting how far we get. Now I'm a Disney employee."
More like one of its major stars.
Next month, Chappaqua's Williams begins shooting her third season as wicked Wilhelmina Slater on "Ugly Betty" on Disney-owned ABC, while wrapping up her role in Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie."
